Along with Building and Programming, a large part of our robotics team is spreading STEM throughout our community. With fundraisers, connections to professionals in the engineering community, and mentoring programs we learn and share all of our FIRST experiences to better the future of engineering.
Google NYC 2020:
We visited Google’s Office in Manhattan to tour their facilities and learn about how a large-scale technology company operates. Many of our younger and newer members learned how to navigate to and around New York City on the LIRR and subway. Google’s success is achieved largely because of their unique methods of facilitating productivity and creativity. We are so grateful for the opportunity to visit Google’s office, as it gave us insight that is not available to the public.

Fundraisers at Applebee's 2019:
To connect with our community, we decided that the best way to simultaneously inform people about our club and raise money for our team was through a restaurant fundraiser. To advertise the fundraiser, members of our team put flyers up at every school in our district and included details of the fundraiser in our morning announcements. We used social media and every resource at our disposal to further inform the community of the fundraiser. Word of the event made its way to the door of Mohammad Sohail Rana, a community liaison for New York state senator Anna Kaplan, who attended the fundraiser and presented us with a certificate and a headline in our local newspaper. The fundraiser ended up being a remarkable success.

FRC Great Neck South Rebel Robotics Visit 2019:
We connected with Great Neck South High School to learn and experience what is involved in creating and operating an FRC team. Rebel Robotics, Team #2638 started in 2008, and was courteous enough to offer us a tour of their workshop. After learning about their specializations, we thought it would be good to implement their strategies into our own team to allow for people to learn and improve in areas of public speaking, outreach, programming, and building. We broke into groups to tour their different workshops and get to know their team members better. Their resources and classes for robotics were separated into three categories- engineering, programming and business. For engineering, they would use their woodshop to prototype different robot ideas and create specific parts out of wood. In programming, they’re learning to use Java for this upcoming season. This experience showed us the programs they use and the workshops they have. As we were leaving, they generously gave us spare team shirts as a parting gift after we gave them one of our team shirts.
FIRST Lego League Junior Robopandas Jr. 2019:
Three of our team members supported the Robopandas Jr. (FLL Team #18219) at their expo at Mineola High School, as well as inspire others to join FIRST. We brought a tile runner robot to demo for the students. Approximately 50 students, including members of several FLL Jr. teams, had the opportunity to drive our test robot. We explained the controls, the mechanics of the robot, and programming to the kids and parents. We also educated parents on FIRST’s FTC robotics, goals for the Rover Ruckus Challenge, and the progress we’ve made with the robot and team this season.
